European Cultural Village

Palkonya, known for its historic cellar row and red round dome church on the famous Villány-Siklós Wine Road, represents Hungary in the European Cultural Village movement. In 1999, 12 villages in 12 European countries came together under a Dutch initiative to launch a cultural village movement, modeled on the European Cultural Capital movement. Austrian, German, Greek, Spanish, English, Italian, Czech, Estonian, French, Dutch, Danish participants meet several times a year on the basis of a 10-year program, including public exchange visits, students, youth camps and conferences once a year. The last is mainly attended by the mayors. In previous years, there have been conferences on nature conservation, social issues, tourism, sustainable local development, as well as stand-alone projects such as the Elderly Project, the Living Village project or the Europe Tour project. The villagers and their inhabitants already know each other very well, and many friendships have been made in recent years during encounters. There would be many new applicant villages, but we decided not to expand the membership, but to help bring new movements like this to life. In 2007, Palkonya hosted the annual events of the European Cultural Village.

In 2019 we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the European Cultural Village Movement! Anniversary events were organized by the Dutch village of Wij aan Zee, where our village was also represented.  For more information, visit the recently revamped European Cultural Village website.
